Conta-nos a História | Tell us the Story

On this weeks Tell us the Story feature, we have Ana Raimundo, also known as fric de mentol, telling us the story behind a screen print made on a very special night.

There's always something behind my work, usually I represent a bit of the everyday life, what goes around, details, colors that I want to share… I chose this particular screen print because it was made in a peculiar night, full of coincidences.

The sketch had some time, it was a familiar scene, the three in a night of laziness and fleas on the couch. Strangely, seemed like a summer night, those which I like to stay up late around ink and inspiration. With an attractive sketch I decided to start making the master (the original).

The night was still warm, with luck it would dry quickly and be ready to be printed on paper. While it was drying, I started to work in other things at the computer, answering some emails and posting silly things online.
I didn’t make much, the internet connection went down and 3 seconds later I saw the monitor flicker, and I was shook, sitting in the chair.
At the same time I heard, from the other room: 'heyyy, the sofa is shakingggg'
It was all very fast and when I thought it could be an earthquake it had ended, but I jumped down the table and yelled, "Hey! Must be jelly”.
No more replicas were felt and we let out some laughs with the all 'scene', we had just felt the first earthquake on our existence, and the sofa was there too.
The screen print was finished that night; the title could not be other than “Hey! The sofa is shaking"!

I loved this story! Ana is too funny.
I remember what I was doing this day, I didn't feel the earthquake. I was at North since I was visiting the Panasqueira Mine the next day.

Ana has a blog and an etsy shop, fricdementol with amazing artwork and prints. You can also be a fan of her Facebook Page!

Lista | List

Freakin To Do list notepad, from finchandhawk

Adoro listas.

I love lists.
You can even say I'm a list kind of person. The thing I like most in lists is crossing over an item, after a task is completed.
I haven't been myself on the last few days, so I decided to start the day earlier today and made a list with the things I had to do today and a list of things that have to be made until next week.

Today I finished two custom orders, send another one in the mail (that made me go to the P.O. - another task), went to visit a friend that needed something from me, wrote a letter to the Finances (*sigh*), returned a call that I supposed to a while ago, listed something new on etsy and.. I'm working on another item of the list: to blog.

Things I have to do until next week (on Mitsy's from ArtMind style):

1. Make a call that I really don't want to make.

2. Acabar 2 Capítulos da minha tese
2. Finishing 2 Chapters on my Thesis

3. Make a pair of earrings, a ring and a brooch that 2 friends ordered

4. Fazer o IRS 2009 (*suspiros*)
4. Taxes time again... (*sigh*)

I'll keep adding to this list and crossing items over when tasks are completed. Maybe this way I can be more focused!

Queremos a Selecção com Bigode na África do Sul!

In English after the photos :)

The Soccer World Cup in South Africa is coming, and a couple of months ago, a group of driends decided to start a facebook page called: We Want our Soccer Players With a Mustache in South Africa.
Oh, and what a glorious idea it was!

The purpose with this is also to remember those glorious soccer days when all the players wore the typical Portuguese mustache. They are asking the team players to let their mustaches grow for the World Cup Series, but also every Portuguese man.

For those who know me really well, I'm a fan of the mustache. If a men has beard or a mustache, he may not be anything special, but I'll look twice. Yup, true story. I do love those hairy faces.
Letting my mustache grow, as some of the
typical Portuguese women have it's not an option for me, but I really wanted to participate somehow. So there you have, the Pink Mustache Necklace :)

Feliz | Happy

I started writing a quite depressing post today.
The sun decided to appear behind all those clouds (and rain) we've been having lately, but not my good mood (last couple of months have been hard on me).
But, instead of leaving you with self pity, I decided to show off my latest colorful creations!
An ode to joy, to happiness, to color!
Because no one has the patience for others problems, right?

Tell us The Story

Welcome to my new blog feature: Tell Us The Story. Every week (or so) we'll be reading about the story behind an handmade item, told to us by it's creator.
Last week we read the story behind azulado's flower bowls and today we're hearing about Inger Maiike, a wool felting amazing smiling artist.

Here is the story of a wrap I made for me. Truth be told I make them all for me, but most I sell after having convinced myself it really will not do to keep all I make as there would be no space for us humans..

From the very first day I started felting my main goal was to make felt as soft as possible, first I bought my wool locally, then found softer wool on the net. Still always small amounts as it was just for myself. Then I started selling and needed more and larger amounts. One day I found 2 things that to this day are the basis of all I make. I found a wholesaler selling the very softest merino wool I had ever felt and soon after I found something called silk lap. Silk lap is pure silk, the very long fibers. These are not spun but stretched cocoons over huge frames. The silk laps are mainly used as filling for silk duvets. But in combination with supersoft merino wool oh boy what delicious soft warm luxury!

These silk laps are not easy to find and now after 2 years scouring the net I found a wholesaler who is willing to send me not 100 kg at a time but one kilo increments. So here we have it. Many years of research, building skill and finding just the right supplies have led to this scarf.

There is even more to it, the wool I use does not come dyed, so that I had to learn too. At first I started with premixed colors, then from there progressed to making my own colors. Blue, red, yellow and black give me all I need.

These skills I learned so I could have the softest, warmest, prettiest and along the way I picked up several more skills of a fibery nature. Wich also led to selling what I make for myself to people who share my love for beauty.

Oh Inger, and beauty you give us! Make sure you drop by her shop and be amazed by the uniqueness of her creations!
